Our work includes synthesis, characterization and study of the liquid crystalline behavior of some new heterocyclic compounds derived from 1,3-phenylendiamine and 1,4-phenylendiamine compounds, as follows<\/span><\/h3>\n

The first synthetic route includes the synthesis of N,N-(1,3 or 1,4–Phenylene)bis(2-chloroacetamide) [I]a,b then conversion to corresponding N,N-(1,3or 1,4–phenylene)bis(2-azidoacetamide) [II]a,b by reaction with sodium azide.<\/span><\/h3>\n

These compounds reaction with acrylic acid to give compounds [III]a,bwhere converted to ester compounds [IV]a,b when reaction with methanol.\u00a0 Also ester compounds [IV]a,breaction with hydrazine hydrate 80% to form acid hydrazide compounds [V]a,b, The compounds n- alkoxybenzaldehyde[V]n\u00a0 synthesized from hydreoxybenzaldehyde with alkyl bromide , these compounds reaction with acid hydrazide to produce Schiff bases compounds [VII]n , [VIII]n where (n=1,2,3,5,6,7,8) .\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The secndsynthetic route includes the synthesisbenzimidazole compounds[IX]a,b\u00a0 from reaction compounds [III]a,b with o-phenylenediamine . The third synthetic route includes preparation the compound4-(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)benzaldehyde [XIV] from reaction 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde with propargylbromide . These compound react with compounds [II]a,b to give 1,2,3-triazole compounds [XV]a,b , that react with different aromatic amines to produce Schiff bases compounds [XVI]a-d and [XVII]a-d .\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Finally the fourth synthetic route includes synthesized oxazoles compounds [XVIII]a, band \u00a0thiazoles compounds [XIX]a,bby the reaction of compounds [I]a,b with urea or thiourea in absolute ethanol . Then these compounds\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 react with different aromatic aldehydes in pipyridine and THF to give compounds [XX]a-c and [XXI]a-c when use urea and to give compounds [XXII]a-c and [XXIII]a-c when use thiourea .<\/span><\/h3>\n

All the synthesized compounds were characterized by melting points, \u00a0FT-IR , 1HNMR and mass spectroscopy (some of them).<\/span><\/h3>\n

The liquid crystalline behavior of all compounds were studied by using optical polarizing microscope (OPM) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC)(some of them). \u00a0and the results were as follows :-<\/span><\/h3>\n

All Schiff bases [VII]n and [VIII]n exhibited enantiotropicliquid crystalline behavior .<\/span><\/h3>\n

The compounds[VII]1 . [VII]2 , [VII]3 , [VII]5 and [VII]6 exhibit enantiotropicnematic phase\u00a0 while the compound\u00a0 [VII]7exhibited enantiotropicsmectic A and nematicphasesIn addition to the compound.[VII]8 exhibited enantiotropicsmectic B phases beside to nematic phase<\/span><\/h3>\n

The compound [VIII]1 didn\u2019t show any liquid crystalline properties. While the compounds [VIII]2, [VIII]3 , [VIII]5 and [VIII]6 showed enantiotropicnematic phase.\u00a0\u00a0 The compound [VIII]7\u00a0 displaysenantiotropicSmA\u00a0 phase only \u00a0. In addition to the compound [VIII]8\u00a0\u00a0 showed SmAandnematic phases . Thebenzimidazole compounds [IX]a,bexhibited smecticic phase . While amide compounds [XI]a-d and [XII]a-d did not show any liquidcrystalline properties but only. Transition from crystal to isotropic phase.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Also the thiazolidine-4-one compounds [XIII]a,bdid not show any liquid crystalline properties only transition from crystal to isotropic phase.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 As while as , the Schiff bases compounds [XVI]a-d and [XVII]a-d didn\u2019t show any liquid crystalline behavior.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0While , the Schiff bases of oxazole compounds [XX]a-c showed SmA phase but the compounds [XXI]a-c didn\u2019t show any liquid crystalline behavior .\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n
