style=\"color: #993366\">Transition metals and their oxides have emerged as promising materials in a wide array of applications, most notably in catalysis, lighting, electronics and automobile industries.\u00a0 These applications are stemmed from the unique properties of transition metal oxides as materials having excellent mechanical and optical properties. These in turn push them to be exploited in different applications dealing with the improvement of optical and mechanical characteristics of materials.\u00a0 The chemical as well as the thermo\/mechanical characteristics of these materials are largely unknown. Rare earth metals, as a part of transition metal family, and their oxides have showed good features and characteristics as efficient materials in many important industrial fields, namely car and electronic industries.\u00a0 This is due to the unique properties of rare metal oxides as oxidation resistant and water repelling surfaces. This in turn plays a crucial role in extending lifetime of the coatings, enhancing their hardness, and increasing their thermal stability under harsh operating environment. Investigations of structural, thermal, optical and mechanical properties of films, purely consisting of transition metal oxides or doped with them have been and is still the focal focus of many researches. Experimentally, the aforementioned properties of these films were probed using a combination of the characterization techniques such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), ultra violet visible (UV-vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nanoindentation.
