Abstract<\/span><\/h3>\n

In this study, a new steganographic method depend on the quantizing perceptual color spaces components is presented. The proposed method consists of two steps, the quantization and encoding (implementation) steps. In the quantization step, one of the perceptual color space components is quantized to a two-digit number according to its range (0-1, 1-100 or 0-360), in the encoding step the quantized number is modified by adding an extra fixed amount to indicate that the implemented message\u2019s bit is 1, otherwise it means the message bit is 0.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Four perceptual color spaces are used to test the new method which is HSL, HSV, Lab and Luv, where different algorithms to calculate the last two-color spaces are used. The results reveal the validity of this method as a steganoic method ,an analysis for the effects of quantization and encoding process on the quality of the cover image and the quality of the perceptual color spaces components are presented.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The comparison of the proposed hiding method results with the standard LSB method results by using the same cover image and the same message reveals that the using the achromatic component in the perceptual color spaces to hide the message is equivalent to use of the first and second bit in the LSB method, while the use of the chromatic components in the perceptual color spaces is equivalent to the use of the second or the third bit of the LSB method.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The advantage of using the proposed method is that it is not statistically detectable compared to the LSB method because the damage resulting from this method is characterized by randomness with less damage to color components<\/span><\/h3>\n

Conclusions and Recommendations<\/span><\/h3>\n

This study shows the validity of using the quantization of the perceptual color spaces components to implement a message in it. As a cover image, the use of saturation component gave the best results but for the retrieved message the achromatic component revels to be the best. The use of a different algorithm to transform the cover image from the RGB color space to the Lab color space has no effect on giving the worst results<\/span><\/h3>\n

In general, the cover image\u2019s texture and color contrast, have a counter relationship with the final cover image quality and the ability to retrieve the implemented message. From the results, the HSV and Luv color spaces show high immunity to the change in the texture and the color contrast and give the best results regarding the cover image quality and the ability to retrieve the message<\/span><\/h3>\n

In spite of been the results that obtained by using the proposed method is equivalent to use the first or the second bit for the achromatic components and second or the third bit for the chromatic components by using the LSB method to implant the message, but is superior to the LSB method since it is untraceable statistically, which make it very hard to the steganalysis to detect if the image is implemented with a message or not<\/span><\/h3>\n
