      The current study dealt with the morphological description, histological structure and some histological and biochemical measurements of the liver and pancreas, as well as the concentration of sugar (glucose) in the blood plasma during two seasons of the year ( the hibernation season and the activity season) for the male spiny-tailed lizard (UromastyxaegyptiamicrolepisBlanford, 1875). The work in this study required the collection of ten adult male specimens of the spiny-tailed lizard for each season. In the histological study of the liver and pancreas, routine and special stains were used, which are Harri’shematoxylin and Eosin Y, periodic acid Shiff (PAS) stain, Masson\u00b4s trichrome, Alcian blue, (Gomori’s) methenamine silver stain and immune histochemistry technique, while the analysis of amino acids, fatty acids and glycogen using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) device<\/span><\/h3>\n

      The morphological examination of the liver gland during the activity season showed that it appears larger than it was in the hibernation season, where the liver appeared in the form of a three-lobed gland, dark brown in color. No clear differences were observed in the liver in terms of color and location during the two seasons, except that the light brown spots disappear during the activity season, as well as that there is pressure from the parts of the digestive canal on the liver pushing it towards the front of the abdominal cavity more than during the hibernation.The histological results of the liver that were obtained during the two seasons showed a number of clear differences and comparisons. The hepatic parenchyma of the male lizardU. aegyptiusmicrolepis, is surrounded by the hepatic capsule, which consists of thin loose connective tissue, but it contains low-density collagen fibers during the activity season, It was noticed during the two seasons of the study the absence of lobular division of the liver and also the absence of any difference in the regularity of the hepatocytes, which were arranged in the form of hepatic cords with the thickness of one or two cells or in the form of acini. The hepatocyte appeared in the form of a polyhedral or pyramidal cell with mostly one nucleus. During the activity season, hepatocytes were found to be large in the area and with a less acidophilic cytoplasm. The use of the PAS stain also showed the presence of small-sized glycogen granules that spread in almost every cytoplasm of the hepatocyte during the activity season and do not accumulate in a specific area as at the beginning of the hibernation season. As for the use of the Alcian blue stain, it has been shown that there is a weak response of the hepatocyte cytoplasm towards this stain, compared to the negative response to it during the hibernation season. Microscopic examination revealed the presence of cells other than hepatocytes in the liver parenchyma such as squamous endothelial cells, Kupffer cells, Ito cells and mast cells which appears to have an increase in its numbers during the activity season compared to the hibernation season. The histological study also showed the presence of melanomacrophages of varying area’s average (small, medium and large), which \u00a0showed no significant change in their \u00a0average area and number, except for the average number of large one that decreased significantly (P < 0.05) during the activity season compared to the hibernation season, regarding the portal area, central vein and hematopoietic tissue in the liver, no change was observed in their components upon microscopic examination during the two seasons<\/span><\/h3>\n

      \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The morphological study showed that the pancreatic gland appears during the activity season in a white color that tends slightly to pink, and it appears lighter in color than the season of hibernation, but from the morphological point of view, no change was observed in the shape of this gland during this season compared to the season of hibernation, as it still retains its elongated shape compressed on both sides, it also consists of two merging lobes, the ventral pancreatic lobe, which is divided into the ventral pyloric lobe and the ventral duodenal lobe, while the other lobe is the dorsal (splenic) pancreatic lobe.The histological study of the pancreas of a male lizard showed that the pancreatic capsule, which surrounds the parenchyma of the pancreatic gland, consists of irregular dense connective tissue during the two seasons of study. It sends some trabeculae towards the parenchyma of the ventral pyloric pancreatic lobe and the dorsal (splenic) pancreatic lobe. However, they do not penetrate deeply into them, and in the case of the dorsal lobe, they form clusters of acinib ordered by connective tissue. Moreover, some of these trabeculaein the case of the ventral pancreatic duodenal lobe penetrate deep into its tissue to define clear structures called lobules. The histological study during the two seasons did not show any difference in the number of cells formingacini (4-12), which are arranged in a single row of pyramidal-shaped epithelial cells. These cells contain largenuclei that are spherical or ellipsoidal in shape, while their cytoplasm is homogeneous in color and contains zymogen granules, which appear more clearly in the activity season compared to the hibernation season. The results of the microscopic examination during the activity season and compared with the hibernation season showed that the endocrine part represented by the islets of Langerhans showed a discrepancy during the two seasons in terms of location, area, number, distribution, shape and composition within the pancreatic parenchyma of the ventral pyloric lobe and the dorsal lobe. While the pancreatic islets is absent within the pancreatic tissue located in the ventral duodenal lobe. The result of the microscopic examination showed that the parenchyma within the three pancreatic lobes during the activity season contains three types of endocrine cells, similar to the hibernation season, which are the cell that is immune to glucagon, the cell that is immune to insulin and the cell that is immune to somatostatin ,which varied in terms of their presence, distribution, shape, and rate of area and number.<\/span><\/h3>\n

      The result of (HPLC) showed that the liver of spiny-tailed lizard during the activity season contained 18 amino acids, which include, 10 essential amino acids and 8 non-essential amino acids, which are the same as those found in the winter hibernation season, but their concentration rates were different during the two seasons. All types of amino acids during the activity season are higher than their counterparts during the hibernation season. The result of (HPLC) also showed that the liver in the male lizard contained five fatty acids during the two studied seasons, which included three types of saturated fatty acids and two types of unsaturated fatty acids, which varied in terms of their concentration and dominance during each season. The result of (HPLC) showed that there was an increase in the average level of glycogen concentration during the activity season (May), as its average concentration reached (1560.1 \u00b1 572.8) \u00b5g\/ml, which increased by a large difference (662.1) \u00b5g\/ml from its concentration during the hibernation season, but There was no significant difference in the result of the T-test at the level of probability (P < 0.05).Also, it was found that there was an increase in the average level of plasma glucose concentration during the activity season (May). Its average concentration reached (144\u00b112.38) mg\/dL, recording an increase in its concentration rate by a difference of (22.50) mg\/dL compared to its average concentration during hibernation season, as the result of the T-test showed a significant difference at the level of probability (P < 0.05).<\/span><\/h3>\n
